Free COSHH assessment template with nine pre-filled kitchen chemical assessments

## In one sentence

The COSHH Assessment Template is a free PDF for UK food businesses with 11 record sheets: blank coshh assessment form with the 17 fields inspectors expect (product, sds reference, ghs symbols, h-codes, exposure, controls, ppe, storage, first aid, spills, disposal, review), pre-filled assessment: bleach and chlorine-based sanitiser, pre-filled assessment: descaler and limescale remover. Download it, print it or fill it in, and keep it with your food safety records; Paddl keeps the same records on a phone with timestamps and reminders.

A COSHH assessment identifies the hazardous substances in your workplace and the controls that keep staff safe from them. Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 every UK employer must carry one out and keep it on record, and for a kitchen or bar that means every cleaning chemical, sanitiser, oven cleaner, descaler and the gas in the cellar. This free template gives you the 17-field form inspectors expect, nine of them already completed for the products most hospitality businesses use, and an inventory register to track which products still need assessing. Change the details to match your own product's safety data sheet, sign and date each one, and you have a COSHH file rather than a blank template.

## Why you need it

- COSHH assessments are a legal requirement under the COSHH Regulations 2002 for every employer that uses hazardous substances
- EHO and HSE inspectors ask to see them, particularly where chemicals are stored near food
- Bleach, oven cleaner, descaler and drain cleaner are corrosive: a written control stops a porter learning that the hard way
- A pre-filled assessment gets you from nothing to a defensible record in an afternoon rather than a month

## What is included

- Pre-filled assessment: caustic oven and grill cleaner

## How to use it

1. **List every chemical on the premises** Walk the kitchen, bar, cellar, toilets and cleaning cupboards and write every hazardous product into the inventory register, including anything decanted into a spray bottle.
2. **Match products to the pre-filled assessments** Nine common products are already assessed. Write your product name and supplier at the top, then check every line against that product's safety data sheet and correct anything that differs.
3. **Complete a blank form for anything else** Use the blank 17-field form for products the pack does not cover, taking the hazards from Section 2 of the SDS and the controls from Sections 7 and 8.
4. **Sign, date, brief the team and diarise the review** Each form needs an assessor, a date and a review date. Brief the staff who use each product and record that briefing. Review annually and whenever a product changes.

## Tips

- Keep the completed assessments by the chemical store, not in the office: the porter needs the first aid line, not the manager
- Never decant chemicals into unlabelled containers, and include any decanted bottles in the inventory
- Substitute where you can: pre-diluted sanitiser and a milder oven cleaner shorten the assessment and remove risk
- Remove products you no longer use so the inventory matches the shelf
- Paddl's free SDS reader pulls the hazard codes and controls out of a safety data sheet for you
