Which Food Safety Software Has AI Features?
Which UK food safety platforms use AI for HACCP generation, document reading and staff questions, what each costs, and where the AI stops and a competent person takes over.
Paddl is £69 per location per month with a 30-day free trial and uses AI to write the HACCP plan and SFBB pack from your menu, read allergens off supplier documents, extract expiry dates from licences and insurance, and answer staff questions in the app. FoodDocs also generates HACCP plans with AI; most other apps use "AI" to mean reminders.
Key Facts
In Detail
Useful AI in food safety software does the writing and reading a manager would otherwise do by hand. Paddl's AI drafts the HACCP plan and the SFBB pack from a description of your menu and processes, builds the allergen matrix from supplier spec sheets and menus, pulls renewal dates out of licence, insurance and lease PDFs, and runs Paddy, an assistant that answers questions from your own records (what is overdue, which fridge failed, when the last pest visit was) and can draft a routine or a shift for you to confirm. The limits matter as much as the features. An AI-drafted HACCP plan is a draft: a competent person in your business must check the hazards and critical limits against what you actually do, and sign it. AI does not replace Level 2 or Level 3 food hygiene training. And an assistant that can only see your records cannot tell you what an inspector will decide. FoodDocs is the other platform with real HACCP generation, priced from $99 per site per month. Trail, SafetyCulture and Checkit are strong on checklists and sensors and use AI mainly for summaries and anomaly flags.
AI features that save real time
Writing a HACCP plan from scratch takes a consultant a day or two and costs £500 to £2,000. An AI draft takes about fifteen minutes and then an hour of your review. Building an allergen matrix for a forty-dish menu by hand takes an afternoon; reading it off the recipes and supplier sheets takes minutes. Typing every licence and policy renewal into a calendar is the job nobody does, which is why renewals get missed; extracting the dates on upload means the reminder exists the day the document does.
How to test an AI claim in a demo
Ask the vendor to generate a HACCP plan for a dish you serve and read the critical limits. If they are generic (cook to 75°C, chill within 90 minutes) rather than specific to the process you described, it is a template with a chatbot in front. Ask the assistant a question only your data can answer, such as which fridge was out of range last Tuesday. Ask what happens when the AI is wrong: who reviews it and where the sign-off is recorded.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is an AI-generated HACCP plan compliant with UK regulations?
It can be, once a competent person has reviewed it. Regulation (EC) 852/2004 requires a documented procedure based on HACCP principles that reflects your actual operation; who or what wrote the first draft does not matter to the inspector, but the review and sign-off do.
Can AI replace food safety training?
No. It can answer a question at 11pm and point staff at the right procedure, but Level 2 and Level 3 food hygiene qualifications, allergen training and induction still have to be done and recorded.
Simplify food safety compliance
Paddl automates temperature logs, HACCP plans, SFBB records, and more - so you always have the answer when an inspector asks.
